ANGLERS TAVERN BOAT RAMP - History
The Angler's Arms Hotel has occupied this site since the 1860's, and offered boating facilities for fishermen. Angling has been a popular pastime in this area for over 120 years. The Maribyrnong Motor Boat Company had a jetty adjacent to the Angler's Arms from about 1907. The service was taken over by Daniel Hicks, and operated a ferry service to his teagardens upriver at Avondale from 1909 to 1947. A small boatshed/ramp and ferry were evident onsite sometime prior to 1911. A jetty and ramp are evident in sometime after 1911. A jetty once stood at this location around 1922 for ferrying passengers to and from the Riverview Tea Gardens. During WW2, the site housed a tearooms and cinema. A private slipway existed at this location sometime prior to the 1960's when the hotel was previously called the Anglers Arms (Somerville, pers comms).ANGLERS TAVERN BOAT RAMP - Interpretation of Site
Although the concrete ramp appears to be a modern fabrication, historical images show that boats were rented and launched in this same area for many years, and it is possible that the ramp was built on the foundations of the previous structure. This area has social significance as a former popular recreational facility, and is part of the recreational landscape of the Maribyrnong River and Melbourne
