RALEIGH ROAD TRESTLE BRIDGE PILES - History
This bridge was erected from 1868-9 with funds from the Melbourne Meat Preservation Works, and replaced the former pontoon bridge at the site. This bridge was demolished in 1911, to make way for the Monier concrete bridge. The latter bridge was later replaced by the current Raleigh Road Bridge.RALEIGH ROAD TRESTLE BRIDGE PILES - Interpretation of Site
The piles from a former bridge trestle bridge structure are located under the current bridge on the western side, between the current bridges' concrete pylon supports (Somerville, pers comms). The outer row of piles are predominantly submerged at high tide, and consist of one circular and four square piles, with a horizontal timber beam connecting the piles on the outer edge. A small square vertical timber was evident inshore near the southern extremity of the inshore pile row. Probably the former road bridge piles.
The site has historical significance as a part of the early roadway infrastructure in the area.
Heritage Inventory Description
RALEIGH ROAD TRESTLE BRIDGE PILES - Heritage Inventory Description
The piles from a former trestle bridge are located on the western side of a current bridge. Two parallel rows of timber piles each spaced 2 m apart, are located near the western river bank. At least 10 circular piles (approximately 45 cm in diameter) on the shoreward row are visible at low tide in the intertidal zone. They extend from the modern north western bridge pylon southwards. A horizontal timber beam connects the piles on the western side.
