TRAMWAY BATHS - History
This complex is labelled as the 'Tramway Baths' in 1890 suggesting they may have been operated as a corporate leisure facility for tramways employees. They were simply named 'Baths' four years later (Cox 1894) and are located to the west of Victoria Avenue. Two single attached enclosures were shown in 1894 (Cox), with a large structure similar to (H7822-0577) approx 450ft from shore on the western arm and smaller enclosure on east linked via a boardwalk. This feature is named as Stubb's Hot Sea Water Baths.TRAMWAY BATHS - Interpretation of Site
The landward extremity of the site is now occupied by the Plum Garland Playground. The promenade seawall in this area has an outward right angle bend at this point, where the seawall then continues eastward, which corresponds exactly to the location of the western shoreward arm of the bathing structure in the geo-referenced Cox (1894) plan. It appears that the shoreward end of the bathing enclosure was incorporated into the later seawall, or the seawall's location was determined by it. Part of the Emerald Hill Baths complex and recreational landscape of Melbourne and Emerald Hill.
