MIDDLE PARK CHINESE FISHERMEN'S HUTS - History
Seven Chinese fishermen's huts are marked on the beachfront on Ross's 1858 chart. These huts belonged to Chinese fishermen who provided produce for the Chinese fish curing industry around 1857. The site was occupied in summer only, and the fishers lived in tents and huts along the shore made from old iron, bags, wood and mud. Several fishermen were eventually evicted from here by the St Kilda Council, and when the military road construction (now Beaconsfield Parade) began here several years later a tin containing gold sovereigns was found (Cooper, 1931a: 162).
The huts would now lie under Beaconsfield Parade, approximately between Nimmo and Langridge Streets, near the beachfront.
MIDDLE PARK CHINESE FISHERMEN'S HUTS - Interpretation of Site
Seven Chinese fishermen's huts are marked on the beachfront on Ross's 1858 chart. These huts belonged to Chinese fishermen who provided fish for the Chinese fish curing industry around 1857. A timber beam was located offshore in this area during an inspection, and may be part of a former slipway possibly associated with this facility?? - see H7822-0458
