VICTORIAN NAVY MOORINGS - History
Due SE of the former Town Pier and directly in front of the Lagoon Pier East Training Wall, there were a line of four moorings for the Victorian Navy vessels that ran from this point in a SW direction. The ships were spaced approximately 100m apart, and were named as moorings for the vessels Albert, Victoria, Cerberus, and Nelson in that order. These moorings are probably associated with the Port Melbourne Submarine Mining Company Jetty, Drill-rooms and Mine Telegraph Cable onshore nearby. If the vessels were moored here, archaeological debris, as well as mooring anchors and chains may still be present here.VICTORIAN NAVY MOORINGS - Interpretation of Site
It is probable that archaeological material and possibly moorings from these vessels may still be found in these locations. This site was the only mooring area identified for the Victorian Navy vessels. They serve as a significant component of the defensive landscape of Victoria.
