ST KILDA BALLAST MOUNDS #2 - History
Unknown - further historical investigation required. Probably relates to a stranding incident, where ballast was thrown overboard to lighten a vessel.
ST KILDA BALLAST MOUNDS #2 - Interpretation of Site
Review listing of ballast mounds in inventory with view to moving them to theShipwreck database. This isto occur November 2008. Entry 30th May 2008.
The site was reported to Venturoni by someone who had lost their yacht keel after striking an obstruction there. When he visited the site he found three lead yacht keels which they had struck the mound. Venturoni has suggested that the site may represent a stranding incident, where after the vessel has run aground, the ballast stone was thrown overboard from either side of the ship. The size of the mounds and distance between them would support this observation.
This site is an example of a ship ballast mound. There are 7 located examples of ballast mounds in Hobson's Bay. These sites may demonstrate archaeological snapshots of shipboard life from refuse deposits found in association, and may also indicate the size of the vessel from which they originated (from the volume and length of the mound). This site may represent a stranding incident, and is the only known example of this type in the Bay.
