COMPASS ADJUSTING BUOYS - History
Five compass adjusting buoys were provided to the west of the extremity of Princes Pier from at least 1864 to 1907. The buoys were a facility provided for swinging (calibrating) ships compasses.COMPASS ADJUSTING BUOYS - Interpretation of Site
Ships moored onto the central buoy, and swung the ships head to point in the direction of the buoy which was positioned at a known compass bearing. This was the only compass swinging facility known to exist in the area, and was an essential shipping facility for the port. The site has not been visited, but Peter Taylor has reported mooring chain and anchor close to the east, which may be associated with this feature (see H7822-0740)
