RUFFLE'S PIER - History
This facility was constructed by Pilot Thomas Ruffle, whose residence, Maxwelton, was located across the road from the pier. He built a stone jetty on the Strand, angled to the shore to reach deep water, sited nearby the present Anchorage Restaurant. Ruffles advertised a ferry service in Sept 1856 and 1860, established at North Williamstown, to ply between his pier and Dalgano & Co. wharf, and to service steamers plying the Yarra. Ruffles died after an argument with locals over theft of stone from the pier structure. The wooden upper section of the jetty was removed (planking and railings) sometime after his death in 1863 and before the construction of Barber's Pier in 1879. The pier is shown on plans from 1864, 1877, and 1879.RUFFLE'S PIER - Interpretation of Site
This was one of the first private jetties built in Williamstown and Melbourne, and was associated with an early ferry service. It represents a unique surviving visible example of this type of structure in the Melbourne area.
Heritage Inventory Description
RUFFLE'S PIER - Heritage Inventory Description
The remains of a rough cut bluestone jetty was still visible at low tide, extending at a 45¦ angle (to the SE) up to 40 m offshore. The structure consists of piled rough cut bluestone rocks approx 3 - 5 m wide up to 3 m off the seabed. It is highly likely that the remains are those of Ruffle's Jetty.
