CROCKER'S PIER - History
Crocker's Pier was built to service the needs of the Hotham Arms Hotel on the foreshore over the road. John Crocker, the leasee, rented the foreshore section from the MHT and constructed the pier c. 1859 to land beer barrels and stores, and for limited salvage works. Crocker is mentioned a number of times in court reports, once in 1859 over a dispute over diving work and again for failure to pay his occupation fee for the 33 ft of water frontage for his jetty site. The site was later known as the old jetty and it was demolished sometime after 1874.CROCKER'S PIER - Interpretation of Site
The site was later known as the old jetty and it was demolished sometime after 1874 (BLC# 19, 22). No visible remains are evident, although the shoreward end of the site has been covered with landfill, and therefore archaeological remains may exist below this.
The site may be significant as the only early example of a private pier associated with a hotel that was identified in the area.
