MICKLEHAM FARMSTEAD SITE - History
Not known
MICKLEHAM FARMSTEAD SITE - Interpretation of Site
The site comprises the ruins of a rural farmstead, possibly dating to as early as the mid 19th century, although featuring later elements of probable early to mid 20th century date.
Including a bluestone house of at least two rooms with an adjacent brick lined cistern at the southern edge of a large stone paved farmyard around which stood a number of bluestone structures which have since collapsed. A dam to the south west of the house islikely the original, and from their location a series of metal pipe sections appear to reflect a later attempt to convey water from the dam, potentially under the power of the collapsed windmill (although this is located some distance away).
The farm may have maintained a large number of livestock, although aside from a few scattered fence posts and a post and wire fence extending to the north, no obvious livestock enclosures were observed.
Later additions to the complex include a concrete floor and three tanks, whilst the presence of several pieces of early to mid 20th century farm equipment indicate the date at which the site was abandoned. The more recent large dam to the east suggests that the farmstead has since been subsumed within a large-scale pastoral operation.
MICKLEHAM FARMSTEAD SITE - Archaeological Significance
The site appears to represent a continuity of agricultural activity over at least a century. It has the potential to yield archaeological information concerning its development from perhaps as early as the mid 19th century.
