TOM DILLON'S GRAVE - History
Thomas Dillon was an old Irishman and former labourer who worked for the O'Rourke family on Suggan Buggan Station. Dillion died aged 89 years on 26 February 1874, of cancer. He was well respected in the area, literate and helped to teach the O'Rourke children to read and write. It is thought locally that he was a convict assigned to the family. A quick search of Irish convict records revealed 3 Tom Dillons who were transported to Australia, but none matched the age. The present fence was built by Nigel Hodge's brother to replace a badly deteriorated single-rail wooden fence that was still there, c1990. An original post was used as a template.Heritage Inventory Description
TOM DILLON'S GRAVE - Heritage Inventory Description
The grave is surrounded by a modern, wooden, 2-rail fence, enclosing an area of 2.45 metres by 1.83 metres. "1874" is set into a top rail of the fence. The relatively modern concrete headstone is basically semicircular, with a slight gothic point. It is set into a small pad of concrete. The inscription was pushed in while the concrete was wet, and reads "At rest, Tom Dillon". Above the inscription is a simple cross, similarly created. The inscription and cross are within a gabled border on the face of the slab. The surface of the grave is earth.
The grave sits on top of flat grassy spur, about 100 metres from the Snowy River Road. A large Apple Box tree is growing on the point of the spur, and to the west the ground drops steeply into Sawpit Gully. The grave has a commanding position above a large flat on the Suggan Buggan River, and the old Suggan Buggan school. Rocky ranges clad in native cypress pine or gum forest rise above the area, in all directions.
