UNKNOWN GIBBO RIVER GRAVE - History
Gold was discovered on the Gibbo River in 1851-52, but mining did not begin until late 1850's. The stretch of river below the grave site was worked intensively for alluvial gold by Eurpopean and Chinese miners. The grave has long been recognised locally, but there is no documentation on who is buried in the grave, or the date and cause of death. Local information has it that a small Chinese camp once existed on the flat. The quince & cherry trees may be early plantings, or descendants of early plantings, and their existence may support a former Chinese presence on the flat. The Lazy H hut is used as a holiday shack, and government policy is that the Crown Lease will expire at the end of its present tenancy.Heritage Inventory Description
UNKNOWN GIBBO RIVER GRAVE - Heritage Inventory Description
The grave is unmarked, and consists of a raised, flat-topped mound about 0.15 metres high, edged in part with river stone. The mound is 2.7 long by 1.7 metres wide, with an earth surface. Evidence of 4 post-holes indicates that the grave was formerly fenced.
The grave is situated beside a fenceline on the edge of a fenced, clear flat between the Gibbo River and the Benambra-Corryong Road. A recent fire-control line has been bulldozed along the fenceline, but has detoured around the grave. Outside the fenceline, the land is forested, and evidence of an earlier fenceline can be seen just outside the existing one. Alluvial gold workings are visible along the river. About 30 metres to the south east of the grave, in the corner of the clearing, are some very old, small quince trees, and to the south, a fenced enclosure contains a number of very old, dead, cherry trees. The Crown Lease is well maintained, and several buildings have been erected on-site.
