CHINESE GRAVES SITE, GIBBO RIVER - History
Gold was discovered on the Gibbo River in 1851-52, but mining did not begin until late 1850's. The stretch of river below the grave site was worked intensively for alluvial gold by European and Chinese miners. According to local information, three Chinese miners were buried in unmarked graves behind Ernest Heinzman's hut on the Gibbo River. The dates and causes of deaths are not known. A Miners Reserve existed on the other side of the Benambra-Corryong Road, and this may have included a Chinese camp.Heritage Inventory Description
CHINESE GRAVES SITE, GIBBO RIVER - Heritage Inventory Description
The grave positions were not precisely located. A pile of rocks 11 metres east of the fireplace and beside the faint dozer scrape is a possible grave. Another pile of rocks 12 metres south of the hut site is also a possibility, but may be a fireplace. Earlier bulldozing works in the vicintiy may have impacted on the grave sites. At the Miners Reserve on the other side of the road, the ruins of several substantial stone fireplaces are visible.
The graves are said to be situated about 50 metres off the Nenambra-Corryong Road. The land is gently-sloping, with a steep fall-off into a gully on the northern edge. This gully has been intensively mined for alluvial gold. The area has an overstorey of tall gum trees, and is normally covered in thick scrub. When inspected, all the scrub had been burnt off in the 2003 bushfires, enabling detailed examination of the area. A stone fireplace at heinzman's hut site is visible, beside a recently-bulldozed Telecom/Telstra track. Another faint bulldozer scrape of an earlier period is visible to the south-east of the hut site.
