BLACK MOUNTAIN STATION GRAVES - History
Five O'Rourke brothers came to Australia during the early 1840s, and some of these young men settled in Gippsland in 1845, where they came to be regarded as a pioneering family. James (and later David) had Wulgulmerang Station, Christopher had Black Mountain and Edward has Suggan Buggan. By his will, Christopher appears to have died on 10 August 1861, rather than the date on the headstone (earlier interpretation was that a mistake had been made where date and age had been transported - ie he died in 1854 aged 44). Young William died at Suggan Buggan in 1875, and his body was brought in and buried close to other family members.Heritage Inventory Description
BLACK MOUNTAIN STATION GRAVES - Heritage Inventory Description
Small graveyard enclosed by post and rail fence, with wire mesh and a modern, galvanised weld-mesh gate. Ground surface covered in rounded river rocks. Dry stone retaining wall visible under fence. 2 recent brass plaques have been installed. One upright, grey-grante, cambered headstone inscribed "In memory of Christopher O'Rourke Died 9th August 1844 aged 54 years, and Edward O'Rourke Died 12 Sept 1902 aged 73 years". The plaques read: "Elizabeth Anne O'Rourke and his wife Mary R.I.P.", and "William Owen O'Rourke died Suggan Buggan 1875 aged 7 years beloved son of Edward John Langley O'Rourke and his wife Anne R.I.P".

Physical Conditions:
Monument and plaque in good condition. Perimeter fence relatively poor. Site maintained by O'Rourke descendant, Nigel Hodge.
