MARSHALL GIRLS GRAVES - History
Mary was the 4th child of Charles Fisher Marshall and his wife Margaret (nee Riley). She died on 13 December 1863 of inflammation of the bowel. The second Mary was their 5th child, and her death was reported in the Gippsland Times as a "melancholy accident". She had been playing at the fire when her clothes ignited. Her mother heard her screams, and ran to extinguish the flames. She was not speedy enough to prevent Mary suffering severe burns, and despite medical attention being summoned, the child's condition worsened. She died after a few hours. In 1987, a day of remembrance was held at the graves by members of the Marshall & Coleman families, and the Maffra & Traralgon Historical Societies.Heritage Inventory Description
MARSHALL GIRLS GRAVES - Heritage Inventory Description
There are two side-by side graves. The southernmost grave measures 2 metres by 1.2 metres, and its surface is covered by a small cairn of rocks, tangled with remnants of wire netting. A brass plaque on a metal stand, total height 0.9 metres, has been erected at the head of the grave. It reads "Grave - Pioneer children 4th & 5th child of Charles Fisher and Margaret Marshall - Both named Mary-Mary born 5th December 1863, Died 13th December 1863 - Mary accidentally burnt, Born 16th November 1864, Died 15th December 1867 - Erected in 1986 by family member". The other grave measures 1.8 metres by 1.1 metres. It has a small metal cross, and is covered by a scatter of medium-sized rocks.
The general area consists of cleared rural land with a few, small scattered trees, in a mountainous area with large deep gullies. The graves are situated a little way up the hill from the steep gully. They are well away from any main roads or tracks, and are hidden from view from any roadways.
