GILLINGALL GRAVES - Heritage Inventory Description
The large grave plot measuring 4.7m wide by 2.4 metres wide is surrounded by a ornamental wrought iron fence. The fence is hooped, with internal spears topped with cast iron fleur-de-lis. A white marble headstone stands within the enclosure. This is semicircular with wavy shoulders, and stands 1.5 metres high. The original plinth is not visible, and the headstone now sits in rough-poured, relatively fresh concrete. The inscription reads: "Sacred to the Memory Margaret, Beloved wife of John Riddell, Who departed this life Decr 13th 1880. Also John Riddell, Beloved husband of the above, Who departed this life Septr 21st 1891". Maker W Bird Jnr, Main St, Bairnsdale. Jonquuils and irises fill the surface of the grave enclosure.
The grave is situated on the crown of a grassy hillock, approximately 50 metres east of the present Gillingall homestead. The spectacular landscape consists of open grassy slopes hemmed in by timbered ranges. The original Gillingall homestead was situated a few hundred metres to the north, at the base of a wide gully feeding into Woolshed Creek.
