WANGARABELL STATION CEMETERY - History
The history of the private cemetery is not known, but it is assumed that it served the local farming community up until the 1950's. Burials at the cemetery range from the earliest in 1873, to the most recent in 1954. Those buried include Henry, Edith & Peter Murray, Isabella & William Stevenson, John Wilcox, and Charles & Charlotte Tasker.Heritage Inventory Description
WANGARABELL STATION CEMETERY - Heritage Inventory Description
The cemetery is bounded by an unpainted, rustic, wooden, post & 2-rail perimeter fence, enclosing an area of approximately 21 metres by 9 metres. The enclosure is fitted with a newer entry gate (pine pickets on welded iron frame). The cemetery has 9 surviving headstones, and one (or two) graves marked by a large rock at the head. For such a small cemetery (10 or 11 visible graves), there is an astonishing variety of headstones. Materials include sandstone, marble, cast iron, and pink & grey granite. Styles include a cross, a pillar with urn, and rectangular & gabled upright slabs, some have considerable embellishment. Most grave plots are marked out with rock edging, overgrown with grass. A small gum tree is growing in the northern end of the enclosure.
The fenced cemetery is situated in a grassy paddock, on a low flat spur a few hundred metres away from the Wangarabell Station homestead. A large, old gum tree is growing several metres to the east of the cemetery. The general aspect is strongly rural, with cleared river flats and gently undulating grazing land. Forested foothills form the backdrop, rising away from the Genoa River Valley.
Physical Conditions: Well maintained.
