CHINAMAN'S POINT CHINESE FISHERS' HUTS - History
Chinese fishers first occupied the area known as Chinamans Point prior to the establishment of a European Fishing industry in the 1860s. The first allotments surveyed as part of the Flat were created in 1864 for lease to licensed fishermen under the Fishing Act of the Victorian Government, and thus became known as Fisherman’s Flat. Originally, the area was comprised of Plank Road (now Wharf Street), which lead to the original fisherman’s pier, and Fish Street (now Bridge Street), which terminated at Chinaman’s Point.
At least ten houses were located in the area, and it is possible that some are located on the former peninsula on the Swan Island side of The Cut.CHINAMAN'S POINT CHINESE FISHERS' HUTS - Interpretation of Site
These sites have great archaeological potential, as these areas appear to be relatively undisturbed. Chinese artefacts have previously been recovered from the Swan Ponds and Creek areas.
