GEORGE WATMORE'S GRAVE - History
The site is reputed to be the grave of an early European settler, possibly a shepherd killed by Aboriginals in the 1840s.GEORGE WATMORE'S GRAVE - Interpretation of Site
Roadside grave within grassy road verge, at base of road alignment batter. A white wooden cross bearing the inscription "George Watmore Speared By Blacks" on the timber and "Renewed 1-12-1998 by R. Scott Portland" on a metal alloy plaque underneath, marks the grave site. An approximately 2 x 2 m area in front of the marker is slightly mounded and partially bordered by bluestone fragments, which are mostly overgrown with grass.
GEORGE WATMORE'S GRAVE - Archaeological Significance
The site is likely to contain the human remains of an early European settler and their examinationmay reveal much about the diet, health, lifestyle and possibly manner of death of the individual.
GEORGE WATMORE'S GRAVE - Historical Significance
The site represents the often violent contact between Aboriginals and Europeans in the early years of settlement.
