FORMER PETERBOROUGH HOUSE - History
In 1886, large timber cottage guest house, Peterborough House, was constructed by James Irvine, a local pioneer. By 1887, Peterborough House was already receiving high acclaim in regional newspapers, praising the accommodation and the hospitality provided by Irvine and his family.
In 1891, Irvine undertook improvements to Peterborough House. By the mid 1890s, the Irvine family were hosting numerous large social events at Peterborough House, including concerts, balls, aid benefits, prominent birthday parties and sports days.
Irvine's family continued to operate the hotel after his death in 1919, until it was sold in 1937. Peterborough House Hotel burned down in 1965.
FORMER PETERBOROUGH HOUSE - Interpretation of Site
Historic early 20th century photos show Peterborough House in the approximate location of the current Schomberg Inn Hotel. It is unclear if the building shown in these photes are a substantially modified version of the original 1860s structure. Compared to the current layout of the buildings it would appear that Peterborough House fronted Irvine Street. It is possible that remains of the footings, subfloor deposits, even a cellar and surface drains of the House maybe present in the parking areas to the south and north of the current building. Highly disturbed remains of the building could be present under the current building.
FORMER PETERBOROUGH HOUSE - Archaeological Significance
The archaeological remains of Peterborough House can provide information on the living conditions and standards of those living and passing through what would have been a remote frontier area in the middle years of the 19th century.
FORMER PETERBOROUGH HOUSE - Historical Significance
The historical significance of Peterborough House lies in it being one of the earliest dwellings in Peterborough servicing travellers along the coast as well as catering for the nascent tourism industry along what is now known as the Shipwreck Coast.

FORMER PETERBOROUGH HOUSE - Heritage Inventory Description
The site is believed to be located within the grounds of the current Schomberg Inn Hotel, Peterborough. The Hotel occupies the centre of the site, facing south. The ground on the corner of Hamilton Street (Great Ocean Road) and Irvine Street is landscaped and grassed. To the rear of the Hotel is an expanse of sealed tarred surface bounded by a shed along its northern edge. To the north of the shed is partially grassed ground, which does not appear at present to be utilised.
