STANLEY STREET STORE SITE - History
Little is known of this store other than it appears in a chart dated 1853.STANLEY STREET STORE SITE - Interpretation of Site
The site is currently under a sealed carpark. It would appear that the tramway for the jetty constructed in 1858 passed over the store, which suggests that either the store had been demolished by this time or that the line passed immediately adjacent to the building. It is not known how the store was constructed but it is expected that the foundations of the building may still be present.
STANLEY STREET STORE SITE - Archaeological Significance
Cultural deposits associated iwth the use of the site as a store could provide some information on goods and produce passing through Warrnambool by sea in the 1840s when the port was poorly serviced by way of maritime infrastructure.
Foundations - strip footings or post-holes are likely to still be present. The possibility of underfloor deposits is unlikely by cannot be discounted. External service drains, fence lines, paved surfaces and refuse/cess pits may also be present.
