Bairnsdale RAAF Memorial - Veterans Description for Public
The Bairnsdale R.A.A.F. Memorial is located in the Beaufort Gardens on the Prince's Highway. The Memorial is dedicated to those who served with the No. 1 Operational Training Unit from 14th June 1942- 22nd April 1943 and the R.A.A.F. General Reconnaissance School at Bairnsdale from April 24th 1943 - March 13th 1946. Specifically mentioned is the no. 7 Squadron R.A.A.F. stationed at Bairnsdale Aerodrome 2 April to 16 August 1942, the no. 1 Operational Training Unit R.A.A.F. It also lists the names of those who lost their lives while at the Bairnsdale, East Sale and West Sale air bases during the Second World War.
The Memorial comprises of an unusual triangular structure with a pyramid in the centre, on which the plaques are attached. Nearby is another memorial that comprises of a tree planted within a bluestone cairn. The attached plaque reads, "This tree was planted on 10th November 1990 by Air Commodore W.H. Garing C.B.E., D.F.C., D.S.C. (USA) in recognition of those who served in the R.A.A.F. Beaufort Squadrons in World War 1939- 1945."
