Albert Coates Memorial - Veterans Description for Public
The Albert Coates Memorial, on Sturt Street, comprises of a bronze statue. Coates (b.1895- d.1977) was a Lieutanant Colonel in the Australian Army Medical Corps. During the Second World War, Coates was imprisoned in a Japanese Prisoner of War Camp in Sumatra where he saved many lives. The plaque on the statue is inscribed with ex-POW Private Bill Hood's memory of Coates: "Colonel Coates stood out...he not only saved lives...he saved reason...he was a man among men."
