FORMER DONNYBROOK ROAD HOMESTEAD SITE - History
The study area is known to have been occupied by Europeans since at least August 26 1840 when one Thomas Walker took up the property. Walker's purchase of the property coincides with the initial land sales of property at the nearby Kalkallo Township. Continued agricultural land use into the 20th century is confirmed by aerial photography from 1962 that show the property to be well-established with two silos at the western reach of the property and a number of isolated and connected buildings.
FORMER DONNYBROOK ROAD HOMESTEAD SITE - Interpretation of Site
Overall Donnybrook Road Homestead Site is representative of rural land use of the Kalkallo area, with possibly 3 phases of occupation:
- 1840s to early 1900s - initial occupation for rural land use, possible occupation
- 1900s to 1970s - rural agricultural land use with expansion of domestic and agricultural structures over time
- 1970s to present - abandonment of rural land practices and occupation of site
FORMER DONNYBROOK ROAD HOMESTEAD SITE - Archaeological Significance
No sub-surface testing has been carried out on the site, but potential archaeological deposits at Donnybrook Road Homestead site may have been disturbed by building removals in the eastern portions of the site. The southern portions of the site are likely to be in fair condition as indicated by the relatively intact artefacts present at the bottle dump. The materials used in the southern portions of the site, bluestone blocks and bricks, also indicate that these areas are likely to contain older deposits in comparison to the northern and western sections which appear to be mid 20th century in age.
FORMER DONNYBROOK ROAD HOMESTEAD SITE - Historical Significance
The Former Donnybrook Road Homestead Site is representative of wider European occupation and rural land use of the Kalkallo area and is of low local historic significance
