Veterans Description for Public
Minyip Mafeking Tree - Veterans Description for Public
The Minyip Mafeking Tree was originally planted, on Donald - Murtoa Road, on 6th June 1900. The tree commemorates the successful defence by Colonel Baden Powell and his garrison of Mafeking in South Africa during the Boer War. The garrison defended Mafeking over 209 days from a Boer siege.
In 1970, the tree was replaced by the Minyip C.W.A and again on Anzac Day in 1996. A plaque was also added to the railed enclosure of the tree, to commemorate those who served in the Korean War (1950 -1953) and in the following peacekeeping missions in Korea between 1953-1958.
