FORMER COALVILLE RAILWAY STATION - History
Over a dozen small privately operated black coal mines were established with government encouragement in South Gippsland in the late 1880s. From 1892, these mines began supplying small quantities of coal to the Victorian Railway. Along with Korrumburra, Outtrim and Jumbunna on the South Gippsland line, Coalville was the centre of one of the principal mining centres. The single track Moe to Thorpdale branch line was opened on May 8th 1888 to transport timber and coal, particularly that from the Moe Coal Company's mine at Coalville. It also served local farms and the wider populace.
In common with many other Victorian branch lines, the Thorpdale line experienced a prolonged fall in revenue through the first half of the 20th century, and it was closed to passenger traffic in 1944. The last goods train ran in 1958, and the line was dismantled during 1961-62.
FORMER COALVILLE RAILWAY STATION - Interpretation of Site
The site of the railway station is marked by a sign. The platform embankment is indicated by the presence of degraded wooden piles at its track-side base. The large earthern ramp was likely used for loading coal from the nearby mines. No other physical evidence of the station or rail track appears to survive at the site.
FORMER COALVILLE RAILWAY STATION - Archaeological Significance
The site has a low potential for sub-surface deposits or structural elements relating to the station and the transport of coal.
FORMER COALVILLE RAILWAY STATION - Historical Significance
The site is significant for its association with the Moe to Thorpdale branch line of the Gippsland Railway, and for its role in the local coal trade.
