Sorrento War Memorial Obelisk - Veterans Description for Public
The Sorrento War Memorial Obelisk, on the foreshore, was unveiled on 11th December 1921 by Captain Stanley Bruce MHR and dedicated by Reverend E. Warner. Inscribed on the memorial are the names of ten Sorento men who lost their lives in the First World War and 34 others who enlisted locally. Another six names are local men who lost their lives in the Second World War.
The monument was built by G. Dawe of Carlton and money for the memorial was raised by public subscription under a large commitee including: Reverend E Warner (Chairman), Reverend Gray Robertson, J Tayton, WM Croad, JH Thomas, J Clark, W Stringer, CH Morgan, H Watts, JJ Kiel, RH Wilkins, W Hurley, James Wright, D Macfarlan.
Captain Stanley Bruce was the local member of Parliament, he was later Prime Minister of Australia but lost his seat in the 1929 election and went to live in England. He became Lord Bruce of Melbourne and was the first Australian born to take a place in the British House of Lords.
The shire has recently refurbished the surroundings of the monument.
