STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
'Allington', a two storey dichromatic brick villa erected in 1872 for Dr. William Shaw, is an unusual Victorian eclectic composition largely based upon Italianate traditions. It incorporates stylistic trends first apparent in the architecture of the villa, 'Belle Ville' in Ryrie Street, by architects Davidson and Henderson, and built in 1870 for Shaw's medical contemporary Dr. David Boswell Reid. Dr. William Shaw alone and in partnership with his brother, Dr. Foster Shaw, made a significant contribution to the medical and public welfare of Geelong. The villa is notable work of distinguished architect, Joseph Lowe Shaw.
