Romsey Gallipoli Memorial Tree - Veterans Description for Public
The Romsey Gallipoli Memorial Tree, on the corner of Main Road and Palmer Street, was planted in May 1971 by Mayor Ted Best. Also present at the planting ceremony were Romsey RSL President Jack West and Bob Laing who was awarded a military medal for his service with the 22nd Battalion at Gallipoli. The tree was grown from a Lone Pine cone brought back from the Gallipoli Peninsula and nurtured into seedlings in the Ballarat Gardens. One of these seedlings was given to Neil Alston and became the memorial tree planted in Romsey.
In 2005, the plaque at the base of the tree was refurbished and a new enclosure added to protect the tree and highlight its importance as a memorial in the Romsey community.
