STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
'The Hawthornes', a single storey brick villa of Colonial Regency style was apparently erected in c1952-53 as a speculative venture by John Matthews, an early Victorian architect/builder/investor, who was responsible for similar developments in Newtown in the 1850's. The villa has interesting associations with the history of the early years of the Free Presbyterian Church in Geelong and is of architectural significance as an example of residential design in Geelong in the immediate post goldrush era.
