Statement of Significance
B Listed - Regional Significance
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
1 Bendigo Street was once home to the Reverend James Apperley and has been the home of Mr. Gray for most of the twentieth century. It is a rare survivor of the early 1850's vernacular timber architecture in Geelong. The use of second hand materials in the 1850's is particularly interesting as it exemplifies the resourceful way of overcoming the acute shortage of materials caused by the influx of people during the gold rush.
It is of regional significance

Residence - Physical Description 1
A single storey weatherboard building set close to the street and with a hipped roof which has a short central ridge parallel with the front elevation. The front four rooms appear to have been constructed by 1854 with second hand materials. This is particularly evident in the roof where for example a tongue and grooved board has been used for a hip rafter. The roof is clad in corrugated iron and beneath this are wooden shingles. Externally the walls are clad in horizontal tongue and groove weatherboards of various widths. Later additions include an attached skillion at the rear, probably last century, and a bungalow style verandah and front elevation. The ceilings of the front four rooms were replaced about 1920.
