Redan Prince of Wales store (former) - Physical Description 1
The former Redan Prince of Wales Store is a two-storey Victorian commercial premises situated on a prominent corner site. It addresses the corner with a chamfered central bay highlighting the entrance. The two main elevations, facing Albert and Rubicon streets, are finished in a smooth render, while the secondary elevations are brick (overpainted).
The upper floor has a blank window in this chamfered bay, flanked by two one-over-one sash windows each in the main elevations. All of the windows have very simple surrounds with stop-chamfering to the sides, and a projecting sill (possibly overpainted stone).
Above the windows is a band of raised lettering, which stretches all the way around the two main elevations. It reads: Redan Prince of Wales Store / Jermyn's / Prince of Wales Store.' The sign sits just above a simple moulded stringcourse and below a projecting moulded cornice. Above the cornice is a parapet with a curved motif above the corner section. It appears to have been greatly simplified in its details, probably during the 20th century.
The parapet is not high enough to conceal the roof, which retains early corrugated iron sheets. The roof terminates in a steep hip on the north side, and abuts a parapeted gable on the south.
The ground floor has been extensively altered during the 20th century; covered in small tiles (overpainted) and large timber shop windows installed. The cantilevered verandah and a single-storey wing on Rubicon Street appear to date from the mid-20th century.
