Former Sebastopol Post Office - Physical Description 1
The house at 176 Albert Street, Sebastapol, is a Victorian villa. A photo dating to 1901 shows the original form of the building. The roof has a transverse gable. The verandah has a convex roof with an integral frieze and brackets. Two corbelled chimneys are evident. Between 1901 (possibly from and earlier date) and the 1940s a small timber post and telegraph office was located in front of the verandah. An early timber picket met the office and continued to the front boundary, allowing public access (NAA, Jan 2011).
The roof and verandah have since been altered and the timber post and telegraph office removed. The house currently has a hipped roof and projecting hipped bay to the right-hand-side of the facade. The transverse gable may have been removed and replaced with a hipped roof with the construction of the rear addition. The house has lost its setting and sits within a paved car park with a warehouse behind.
The house has rock-faced bluestone foundations upon which are orange-red brick walls. Quoins and a handsome box bay window on the projecting bay are finished in cement render. The bay window and the house itself have bracketed cornices. Windows are double-hung sashes with (overpainted) bluestone stills resting on scrolled corbels. The six-panelled front door has leadlight sidelights and highlight (though these appear to be recent reproductions).
The front verandah is a recent reproduction, which does not appear to be very accurate in its details. The cast-iron frieze is contained within a timber frame, as was common in the 1870s and '80s, but the posts are turned timber, which was common from about 1900, creating an anachronistic whole. The verandah floor has been replaced with a concrete slab. It appears that the bricks have been sandblasted and the original pointing replaced. All chimneys have been removed. The roof may have originally been slate, but it is currently covered in modern corrugated steel.
