BARWARRE/BOUNDARY ROADS INTERSECTION ARTEFACT SCATTER - History
Little is known of the place. Rate books indicate that John Ford was paying rates on a 19 acre property and 'hut' in 1864-65 which may have been the property within which this scatter is located (Allotment N, Section 3). The reference to the 19 acres is not clear on its location. However, Ford sold a 19 acre portion ofthe property within which the scatter is located to John Hobbs in 1877-8, who then sold it to James Noble. Noble sold the property in 1888 after which time a succession of people owned the property to the 1920s. By 1933, Mary Ann Ford acquired the land. It is not clear whether this portion contained the site location. John Ford sold another 19 acre portion of the property in 1888 to Walter and Elizabeth Perritt who retained the land until 1909 when it was sold to Emily Mary Eddington. Eddington sold the property to Margaret Munyard in 1910 who then sold it to Susan Chapman in 1915. Chapman died in 1921 and by 1927 the land had been acquired by Mary Ann Ford. Mary Ann Ford died in 1945 (at which time she owner the entire Allotment N, Section 3) and John Ford passed in 1946 after which time Ronald Ford acquired the property.
A structure and two dams are shown on an ordinance survey map which was produced in 1923, but not published until 1928 (see attached) at the location of the scatter. The dams were known to exist by the present property occupiers, Mr and Mrs Fleetwood), but have since been filled in (Fleetwood, 2011, personal communication 29 November). The Fleetwoods did not know of a structure at the location.
BARWARRE/BOUNDARY ROADS INTERSECTION ARTEFACT SCATTER - Interpretation of Site
The site contains portable historic relics on the ground surface at a location that also has introduced and native mature trees. Some of these relics may constitute evidence of the former structure marked on a 1923 Ordinance Map (see attached) of the area of possibly the 1864-5 'hut' mentioned in rate books.
BARWARRE/BOUNDARY ROADS INTERSECTION ARTEFACT SCATTER - Archaeological Significance
Based on the known evidence, the scatter has been assessed as having low to moderate archaeological significance. Although the known site consists of fragmented and a limited number of relics, the potential for currently obscured archaeological remains at the location could contribute information pertaining to one of the earliest structures in the region - a 'hut' from circa 1864-5.
The relics may also/alternatively constitute evidence of the former structure marked on a 1923 Ordinance Map (see attached).
BARWARRE/BOUNDARY ROADS INTERSECTION ARTEFACT SCATTER - Historical Significance
The site has been assessed as having moderate historic val ue based on its potential as being representative of either one of the earliest structures in the region, or part of an influx of occupation to the broader area in the early 1900s. There is historic evidence (including the 1923 Ordinance Map - see attached) of a number of homes being established in the broader area around the early 1900s.
Heritage Inventory Description
BARWARRE/BOUNDARY ROADS INTERSECTION ARTEFACT SCATTER - Heritage Inventory Description
The site consists of a small scatter of fragmented portable artefacts within the property at the north-east ern corner of the Barrewarre/Bouridary Roads Intersection. The site is at the approximate location of a structure shown on a 1923 Ordinance Survey of the area (see attached) and could also be the location of a 'hut' mentioned in rate books from 1864-5. The location currently consists of grassed paddocks, introduced and native mature trees.
