HOGAN'S HOUSE - History
The study area at Lot 3, LP136754, Hogan's Road, Tarneit, is situated within Crown Allotment S, Section 9, of the Parish of Tarneil. The allotment, being 98 acres (39.76 hectares), was granted to John Hogan, a farmer, on the 1st of July 1854. Hogan was also granted Allotments A, C and D in the same Section (parish map 1857). In 1863, the Wyndham Shire Ratebooks record John Hogan as the owner of a farm and 310 acres (125.45 hectares), which suggests that some buildings were on the activity area. In1887, Patrick and Mary Hogan were the owners of a farm and allotments A, C and D, totalling 223 acres (90 hectares) (Wyndham Shire Ratebooks).
In 1902 Daniel Hogan was registered as the owner of 101 acres (40 .87 hectares) and a homestead in Allotment S, Section 9 (Wyndham Shire Ratebooks).
HOGAN'S HOUSE - Interpretation of Site
The site represent a rural homestead and associated features, likely dating to the 1850s.
The cottage itself consists of two main rooms featuring solid, largely extant bluestone walls (although some areas have collapsed on the southern side of the structure, and other areas may have been rebuilt). A potential third room, featuring a partially extant bluestone wall on its northern side, is located on the western end of the structure.
Other elements of the site include exotic trees, a waterhole which mayor may not be man-made, sections of dilapidated dry-stone walling , and a roughly cobbled/surfaced track accessing Hogans Road to the south. There is potential for further, as yet unidentified, archaeological remains within the site extent.
Documentary, architectural and artefactual evidence points to a mid to late nineteenth century provenance. Evidence regarding concrete repairs to the walls, the provision of gas to the cottage via a galvanised pipe and the presence of a machine-made brick BBQ all indicate likely occupation until well into the twentieth century.
HOGAN'S HOUSE - Archaeological Significance
The site has been assessed as retaining moderate significance at a local level. It appears to retain excellent archaeological potential. The statement of significance for the site is asfollows:
Hogan's House represents a relatively well preserved rural cottage relating to the early period of European settlement in both Tarneit and the broader region directly to the west of Greater Melbourne. The site appears to retain excellent archaeological potential, and has been demonstrated to be relatively rare in the local region. Accordingly, the site has been assessed as Moderately significant at a Local level according to Criterion A, Band C of Heritage Victorias' significance assessment framework.
HOGAN'S HOUSE - Historical Significance
The subject site contains the partially extant ruins of a bluestone cottage built prior to 1902, but likely in the period between 1854 and 1863. The cottage is likely to have been built by the onginal grantee, John Hogan, and was occupied by successive generations of the family into the twentieth century. It is likely to be one of the earliest surviving structures built in the area, and is a well known local landmark relating to the colonial period.
Significance of the item according to Criterion A: Moderate Local
