SMITH HOTEL SITE - History
The hotel was run by William and Ellen Smith during the Gold Rush. The restaurant and accommodation house was located in a position so as to attract business from both the White Star Mine and those travelling from Sale to Woods Point.
The hotel was described as a slab house with druggeted walls, which offered little protection from wind or snow. The Smiths' hospitality was noted as renown,it was said that they never refused to feed anyone regardless of whether they had the means to pay.
It is referenced that miner William Watts, who was potentially staying at the hotel, died in February 1865 on the Jordon Road and was buried by William Smith (under the supervision of Constable James McManus)behind the restaurant.
