GOLDEN WALL QUARTZ MINE SITE - History
Golden Wall Mine Site - 1864-68 (Victoria Mining Department) crushing machine erected in 1865 powered by water wheel and water supplied by one mile water race.
Updated 19/07/2022 - The Golden Wall reef was discovered in 1862 but mine was not opened until 1864. In March 1864, it was announced that a prospecting claim had been taken up on a “newly-discovered” reef near Fulton’s Creek after a prospect estimated at 10 oz of gold to the ton had been found. A rush for claims followed. With promising early results a crushing machine was purchased and erected on Fultons Creek, powered by a waterwheel fed by a long water race. The reef was originally worked from the surface via shaft. Operations ceased in 1867 and the plant was sold up. The battery was moved to the Scratabit Mine near Walhalla.

Heritage Inventory Description
GOLDEN WALL QUARTZ MINE SITE - Heritage Inventory Description
Flat areas occur along the creek on either side of the main vehicle track. Features located include chimneys and hut sites with artefact scatter across the site including broken glass, crockery, horse shoes, metal artefacts and nails. The entrance to the golden wall mine occurs directly off Army track several feet from the switchback. The entrance is well formed and clear with little erosion. No beams are used to stabilise the mine entrance, mine is simply an open hole tunnelled into the wall. Updated site description 19/07/2022 - The Golden Wall mine workings show as two open adits on a switchback on Army Track. The lower adit entrance is in the road cutting, at road level. The second adit is situated a short distance from the lower adit, on a bench above road level. Trackworks appear to have removed traces of the former mullock dumps. Thick scrub and steep slippery ground conditions on the uphill side of the upper adit did not permit of investigation of surface workings, which will exist higher on the hill.
