LAKE CORANGAMITE WIRRAWAY A20-714 - History
Site is believed to contain the wreck of a 1945 Wirraway plane issued to the RAAF in June 1945 which crashed into Lake Corangamite, in October 1950 during a low level training exercise. The PilotVance Drummond sustained minor injuries and clung to the wreck until rescued by a local farmer with a small boat. Wirraways were the first aircraft to be mass manufactured in Australia, prior to the first mass manufactured Australian car. The Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation produced Wirraways for use as a general purpose trainer, but were also used in action in the defence of Malaya and Papua New Guinea.

Site contains the wreck of a WWII Wirraway plane A20-714 which crashed into Lake Corangamite in 1950. The skeleton of the plane, including propeller, body and tail structures remain at the site, however no sign of the wings or internal structures are evident
