CAMPASPE RIVER FORMER WEIR - History
The site is the remains of a timber weir erected across the Campaspe River in 1886 to store water for irrigation (Priestley, 1965: 158). The weir was destroyed in a flood during 1887 and was not rebuilt.
CAMPASPE RIVER FORMER WEIR - Interpretation of Site
Edge of timber pylons which supported the superstructure of the weir. No remains of this structure are present in the south bank of the Campaspe River.
CAMPASPE RIVER FORMER WEIR - Archaeological Significance
Site is of low archaeological value. Much of the structure has been substantially destroyed and the piers, associated embankment stabilisation materials and artefact scatter are highly degraded remains associated with the former weir. Most of the timber pylons are rotted and have little structural integrity. The site is in poor condition. While there is some potential to be archaeological deposits associated with the weir below the waterline, there is little likelihood that there will be significant in situ deposits associated with this feature .
CAMPASPE RIVER FORMER WEIR - Historical Significance
Site is of local historical significance. Structural elements associated with an early attempt to create a water storage for irrigation in the local area. Site is fairly well known locally.
