C Listed - Local Significance
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
Strathcona, 68 McKillop Street, Geelong, has significance as a predominantly externally intact example of a transitional Late Federation and interwar Bungalow style. Built between 1917 and 1922 for Elizabeth Coulsen (possibly by Edward Coulsen, a builder), the house appears to be in good condition when viewed from the street. It also forms part of a pair of similarly designed and constructed houses in this part of McKillop Street.
Strathcona, 68 McKillop Street, is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It demonstrates original design qualities of a transitional Late Federation and interwar Bungalow style. These qualities include the hipped and gabled roof forms that project at the front and side, together with the returned broken back verandah situated under the main hipped roof. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the asymmetrical composition, single storey height with upper attic, unpainted brick wall construction, terra cotta tile roof cladding, unpainted brick chimneys with terra cotta pots, wide eaves, timber framed double hung windows, paired square timber verandah columns with projecting capitals, shallow arched timber fretwork verandah valances, timber framed doorway, and the decorative gable infill (brackets, battening and panelling).
Strathcona, 68 McKillop Street, is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with residential developments in Geelong in the early 20th century. In particular, it has associations with Elizabeth Coulsen, original owner, who had this house built between 1917-22, possibly by Edward Coulsen.
Overall, Strathcona, 68 McKillop Street, is of LOCAL significance.

DESCRIPTION
The house known as Strathcona at 68 McKillop Street, Geelong, is set on an average-sized allotment for the area. The house has a front setback of approximately 6 metres, with the front garden consisting of grassed areas and mature perimeter plantings, and also has a large exotic tree. The front is bound by an introduced brick and timber fence, being approximately 1800 mm high. Strathcona forms part of a pair of similarly designed and constructed houses in this part of McKillop Street.
The asymmetrical, predominantly single storey, unpainted brick, transitional Late Federation and interwar Bungalow styled house is characterised by hipped and gabled roof forms that project towards the front and side. These roof forms are clad in terra cotta tiles. Two unpainted brick chimneys with terra cotta pots adorn the rooflines. Wide overhangs are features of the eaves.
A feature of the design is the return broken back verandah formed under the main hipped roof. It is supported by paired square timber columns with projecting timber capitals, and is decorated by shallow arched timber fretwork valances.
Another feature of the design is the attic gable that projects towards the street frontage. It has early timber brackets and an open timber balustrade.
Other early features of the design include the timber framed doorway, timber framed double hung windows arranged singularly or in groups, and the decorative gable infill (brackets, battening and panelling).Heritage Study and Grading
