Stained Glass Window at Winchelsea St. Thomas' Anglican Church - Memorial Window Description & History
St. George, Patron Saint of England, was a popular choice of subject for windows after the First World War. His heroic figure symbolised Australia's connections with Britain - 'home' to most Australians - and the chivalrous and brave attributes of the fighting man. Negotiations between the church and stained glass artist William Montgomery (1850-1927)for a soldiers' memorial began in September 1919, and Montgomery sent several designs for the perusal of the vicar, the Reverend HT Fowler and vestry. St. George was selected at a cost of 42 guineas.
