MOUNT VIOLET COMPLES - RUINED BLUESTONE COTTAGES - History
Mount Violet was the home and headquarters of George Cumming. His father, John Cumming Senior, bought the property in 1856 as part of the Mount Fyans run. John Senior then purchased the Terrinallum run in 1857. The runs were split up between his four sons. After the death of John Senior in 1858, Mount Violet was given to George Cumming. George and his brothers became well known as breeders of Merino sheep. Tenders were called for the construction of a stone residence in 1860 and Honey and Young were the likely architects. Tenders were also called for the construction of an overseer's cottage in 1880. The two ruined cottages may predate the homestead and may have been outstations or shepherd's huts. Maps also show a well near the homestead. By 1874 the property was managed by the McColl family. George Cumming died in 1890 and left Mount Violet to his brother John. He retained ownership until it was purchased for soldier settlement in 1921. The property was subdivided into 69 blocks. Many settlers left and blocks were reallocated in 1924, 1928 and 1934.
