[Historic Information added informally by Heritage Advisor, 21 July 2016]
The existing two storey brick building was constructed in 1911 as Mathews Brothers' Butchers' Shop to a design by the local architects, Laird and Buchan. [Geelong Advertiser, 14 June 1911, p.1] The Federation styled building was originally characterised by a prominent decorative brick and rendered parapet, the first floor having a bank of windows. There was also originally a projecting, post-supported cast iron convex verandah (standard Geelong City design). In the 20th century, parts of the original facade and the post-supported verandah were removed. The front facade was reclad and cantilevered verandah constructed, greatly diminishing the integrity of the front of the building.
