STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
198 Moorabool Street has architectural and historic significance at a local level. It is a representative and reasonably intact example to Inner War architecture on the Geelong area. The building retains its characteristic form and siting, as well as a number of horizontal features typical of the later war period. The National Hotel has historical association with Carlton United Brewery who rebuilt the property I 1944. it has been the site of a hotel for approximately 140 years.

National Hotel - Physical Description 1
DESCRIPTION
Built in 1944, the National Hotel is a three storey brick building that is reasonably intact and demonstrates some of the horizontality of the later war period. On both facades the upper levels are symmetrical and the ground asymmetrical, with a ;large parapet. The facade has moulded string courses and thin lines indented I the render that emphasis the horizontal glazing bars in the windows at both first and second floor level. These opening are the main feature on the facade and are typical double hung sash windows with projection sills. The corner entrance is still in use however the main entrance is positioned below a simple canopy on the Moorabool Street facade. This facade features a wider central bay with triple light casement windows above the canopy. At ground level the tile base has been painted over.
