Statement of Significance
What is significant?
This large Mountain ash is located in Powelltown 60m west off Big Bertha Track, 1km down from Blacksands Road in wattle scrub. It has a huge fire scar on one side of the trunk. It is one of a set of large old growth trees in Victoria also on the register (T12343, T12344, T12345, T12346, T12347, T12348, T12349, T12350, T12351, T12356, T12357, T12358). The huge upper branches of this tree are well illustrated in the photograph taken about 50m up the trunk.
How is it significant?
This Mountain ash (Eucalyptus regnans) is significant for scientific reasons at State level.
Why is it significant?
This tree is outstanding for its size, with a height of 57m, spread of 30m, girth of 15m and very large branches. It is an outstanding example of the species despite a large scar on one side of the trunk reducing its girth. This fire scar allows access to an open room in the centre of the tree. The first known measurements of this tree were taken in September 2012.
