How is it significant?
This Red Beech is significant for scientific, social and aesthetic reasons at the State level.
Why is it significant?
The Red Beech is endemic to New Zealand and uncommon in Victoria; there is currently only one other example in the Significant Tree Register (T12020).At 18.5m with a canopy spread of 11m, this is avery large example of the species.
The tree grows in Forest Glade Gardens, a 14 acre garden in Mount Macedon. The Newton family purchased the land in 1941, then comprised of orchards and paddocks, and set about creating the gardens. In 1971 Forest Glade was acquired by Cyril Stokes. The gardens were developed significantly in the 1970s, but the Ash Wednesday bushfires of 1983 decimated much of the original gardens. However, many of the larger trees survived, including this Red Beech.Post-fire, the owners embarked on a large planting program across the property, developing the gardens into a noteworthy collection of cool climate plants.
