GLEN HUNTLY ROAD LEVEL CROSSING INTERLOCKING GATES - History
The railway line from Caulfield to Mordialloc opened in December 1881 and was extended to Frankston in 1882. The main station structure at Glenhuntly Station was opened in 1882; however, a temporary 1881 Portable Structure remains extant at the station. This structure has been assigned a Heritage Overlay by the Glen Eira City Council (HO112). The line was duplicated to Mordialloc in 1888, prior to electrification in 1922. Electrical signalling infrastructure began being installed on the Frankston Line in 1933. The station precinct was remodelled and a third rail added in 1987. During the early decades of its operation, the area surrounding Glenhuntly Station remained a relatively low-density suburban and mixed agricultural area (Ward 1996 and Victorian Places 2015). Glen Huntly Road functioned as a more significant transport hub with the reinstatement of the Glen Huntly Tram in 1907, terminating north of Glenhuntly Station (Murray and Wills 1980; Ward 1996). This tramway was electrified and extended eastward to Grange Road in 1913. The area saw rapid population growth during the interwar period, with Caulfield becoming wholly residential in nature by 1945. Interlocking gates were installed at the Glenhuntly Road level crossing prior to the extension of the tramway in 1913. The presence of interlocking gates is noted at the level crossing from 1911 (VicSig 2022). These gates were removed in favour of articulated boom gates in 1986.GLEN HUNTLY ROAD LEVEL CROSSING INTERLOCKING GATES - Interpretation of Site
Plans of Glenhuntly Station indicate that the Glen Huntly Road level crossing was fitted with interlocking gates, prior to the installation of the modern gate structures. Interlocking gates were installed at Glen Huntly Road by May 1911 and were replaced by the existing boom-gates in 1986 (VicSig 2022). The station precinct was extensively remodelled at this time, with a third rail line installed to the west of the pre-existing duplicated line. The interlocking gate systems consisted of four columns, located at the corners of the level crossing supporting gates which could be oriented to close either the rail corridor or the road as required. Control mechanisms were located in recessed wells below ground level. Both the gate and columns have been removed. Despite changes to surface level pavement and fencing, it is possible that the structure remain below paving surrounding the original, eastern duplicated rail line. Dial Before You Dig results from December 21, 2022, indicate the presence of subsurface electrical, gas, telecommunications and water infrastructure within the level crossing, particularly affecting the south of Glen Huntly Road. It is also possible that the addition of the third rail line has affected the western side of the former interlocking gate location. A comparable example is the extant remains of interlocking gates identified at Union Road, Surrey Hills North (H7922-0511), which consisted of brick and cement installations up to 2.16 m in diameter extending approximately 1.4 m below ground level (Davison 2022: 22–28). At Union Road, such installations were located and at the north-east (), south-east (), north-west () and south-west () corners of the Union Road level crossing with an 8 m long metal pipe () connecting and . Interlocking gate foundations at Union Road had been partially truncated and disturbed by more recent service installation; however, significant subsurface remains were exposed during works.
Heritage Inventory Description
GLEN HUNTLY ROAD LEVEL CROSSING INTERLOCKING GATES - Heritage Inventory Description
The Glen Huntly Road Level Crossing Interlocking Gates is on the Frankston Line immediately north of Glen Huntly Station (Map 1). The area is covered by sealed surfaces, including both Glen Huntly Road and adjacent pedestrian paths (Map 2). The area is intersected east-west by the duplicated tramway and north-south by the Frankston Line. Overhead rail and tram infrastructure is present with support structures located outside of the proposed site extent. Modern articulated boom barriers are located to the east and west of the place extent.
