Statement of Significance
B Listed - Regional Significance
Located near the camp site of William Buckley, (the Cheshire convict who absconded from the Calcutta in 1803 and lived with aboriginals int he Bellarine Peninsula area until 1835) the well is reputedly the source of Buckley's fresh water at his Breamlea camp. For 32 years, Buckley lived in a hut he built at the mouth of Bream Creek and drew fresh water from the spring now marked by the well site. Although his narrative apparently makes no reference to his source of water. Buckley's life is surrounded by legend.
