STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
The weatherboard Victorian Villa 'Springfield' at Leopold was erected by Denis O'Halloran c 1896 to replace an earlier brick house erected on the site prior to 1857. The residence is a typical example of single storey late Victorian Villa architecture, complete with encircling cast iron verandah and decorated pediment at the entrance. The O'Halloran Family has interesting historical associations with the Bellarine Peninsula property. The house is a good example of vernacular housing of the late nineteenth century.

Geelong Historical Society, Investigator Volume 14 No 3 'Springfield' is mentioned in the following issues of the Geelong Advertiser 17 May 1871, 17 August 1873, 4 September 1875
Michael O'Halloran arrived from County Clare, Ireland in 1850 and was employed by the Anderson Family at Fishers Hill, Barrabool. In 1851 he went to the Ballarat goldfields and later in 1853 he married in Sydney. Upon return to Geelong, O'Halloran leased the London Hotel in Moorabool Street, and later again. The Red Lion Hotel.
The date of acquisition of the Springfield property has not been accurately established, but it is possible he purchased at the sale as advertised in 1857. A detailed Title search and examinations of O'Halloran Family records may reveal further evidence relating to acquisitions and construction of the timber house in c 1896.
