STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
A school has operated in Marcus Hill since 1870. The present site is that of the "New site" chosen in 1875. The school commenced at this site, on the corner of Bellarine Highway and Banks Road, in 1878. The site consisted of a school building and a three room residence. From 1878 to 1905, the school was known as the Queenscliff Road School. The school was closed during the early 1990s and the buildings were removed. The site currently consists of a large palm tree, a large deciduous tree and three pencil pines in a row near a former building location. Various garden plants are located along the frontage to the Bellarine Highway. Rubble remains of the school building site. Concrete pathways and some foundations are also present. Remains of a toilet block and shed are extant. This cultural debris indicates a valuable archaeological site.
As a centre for education in this district since the 1870s, the site and remnants of the former Marcus Hill State School has scientific, historical and social significance.
It is of LOCAL significance
